So, okay you’re pregnant and you are always hungry. I get it. I’ve been there.
In the UK they call being pregnant ‘having a bun in the oven’, and boy, all through my pregnancies I wished I did have something baking, like, all the time. Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh bread but during pregnancy your sense of smell and taste reach new heights. During all three pregnancies the smell of anything baking could make me cry. Even if I had just eaten, I would salivate like a rabid dog.
At least my cravings were somewhat normal. My mother tells me she used to gnaw on chalk or elastic bands when she was pregnant with me. Not quite sure what that was all about but it might expain why I never get heartburn and always bounce back after a cold.
But let’s be serious for a minute, grrls. During your pregnancy do not worry about gaining weight, but don’t take this time as an excuse to just lose the plot either. You will feel hungry but you need to be conscious of steering those pangs toward healthy choices for you and that little bun… er…baby.
One trick that I found useful was to eat in small amounts but lots of times during the day. Eat plenty of greens and richly colored fruit and veggies, chicken, fish, lentils, beans etc. You know the routine. Healthy options that are fullof vitamins and minerals but not overally high in fat. A teaspoon of peanut butter is a great pick-me-up and soups, smoothies and shakes are a good way of packing in vitamins when you need a boost but do not feel like eating. (Although that is a phenomenon that never happened to me whlst I was carrying my brood).
I have it on good authority ( but I am not sure I believe it) that some pregnant women feel nauseous when faced with certain foods or even about eating in general. Odd as this might be to me because pregnancy turns me into the Godzilla of Greed, for those who suffer from this peculiar malady, the same advice applies. Little and often throughout the day will keep your blood sugar levels regular and help prevent feelings of nausea of faintness. Just make sure your little and often is more fruit, veggies and lean protein and less cake, chocolate and pizza, ‘kay?
